Is your belly swollen? Do you bend over in pain? You may have gas in the belly, also called Aerocolia.

Hello, this is Dr. Joy !

Today I’m going to help you understand this phenomenon.

Vamos!

What is aerocolia?

Aerocolia is an overproduction of gas, which accumulates excessively in the colon or large intestine.
The symptoms are often the following:

  • Flatulence
  • Stomach ache, more or less intense depending on the person
  • Swollen belly
  • Constipation (in some cases)

What causes gaz in the belly?

This overproduction of gas in the belly can be caused by the food we eat.
In fact, certain foods can cause gas, such as

  • Cabbages (cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, etc.)
  • White beans
  • Broccoli
  • Lentils
  • Peas
  • Chickpeas
  • etc.

They should therefore be eaten sparingly if you are prone to aerocolia.
This is also the case with :

  • Carbonated drinks (Coke, Fanta, or sparkling water)
  • Spices
  • Chewing gums that contain Sorbitol, an ingredient that promotes gas production

Excessive consumption can cause intestinal inflammation.

Finally, eating too quickly can be bad for your colon. By eating so quickly you swallow a lot of air, which will promote gas production and therefore can cause stomach pains.

How can I get relief from gaz in the belly?

There are natural treatments that reduce gas in the stomach, such as charcoal tablets or debridat. These are available without prescription in pharmacies.

In case of an episode,

Lie on your stomach and put a pillow under your stomach to put pressure on it and help the gas to escape.

You can also lie on your back and massage your belly clockwise, applying pressure around your navel.

Applying a hot water bottle can also help relieve spasms.

And finally, physical activity, by getting your organs moving, can help restore the volume of gas in the bowels.

If the stomach ache persists, contact a GP.

See you soon,

Beijinhos,

Dr. Joy !
