Gynaecological and obstetric ultrasound scans are non-invasive medical imaging examinations that support women’s health, from the reproductive years through pregnancy monitoring.

They enable accurate diagnosis, personalised follow-up and early detection of gynaecological conditions, while ensuring optimal monitoring of pregnancy.

This specialty includes three complementary types of examinations, each providing essential and specific information for medical care.

Types of ultrasound scans:

  • Obstetric ultrasound: Used to monitor pregnancy, assess fetal development, screen for congenital abnormalities, examine the placenta and amniotic fluid, and monitor high-risk pregnancies.
  • Pelvic ultrasound: A non-invasive examination performed via the abdominal approach to assess the uterus, ovaries and other pelvic organs. Indicated in cases of pelvic pain, menstrual cycle disorders, infertility investigations, or for monitoring conditions such as fibroids or cysts.
  • Endocavitary (or transvaginal) ultrasound: A high-precision examination performed via the vaginal route, allowing detailed analysis of the uterus, ovaries and endometrium. Indicated for early pregnancy diagnosis, endometrial disorders, endometriosis, follicular monitoring and detection of small abnormalities.

When should you consult?

  • Pregnancy monitoring

  • Gynaecological pain or disorders

  • Infertility assessment or follicular monitoring

  • Ovarian or uterine cysts, fibroids or other abnormalities

  • Post-treatment or post-surgical follow-up

What to expect during your consultation?

INFORMATION GATHERING: The healthcare professional carries out a detailed medical history and takes into account past medical conditions and current symptoms in order to determine the most appropriate examination.

ADDITIONAL EXAMINATIONS: Further tests or follow-up ultrasound scans may be recommended if necessary to refine the diagnosis.

DIAGNOSIS AND PERSONALISED MANAGEMENT: Results are explained clearly, together with tailored recommendations for follow-up, treatment or prevention.
