What is the Human papillomavirus (HPV)?
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common viral infection of the internal and external genital parts. It is transmitted during sexual intercourse, even without penetration. Approximately 80% of the sexually active population is at some point affected by HPV infection. The critical period of infection is most often at the very beginning of the sexual activity.
There are different types of HPV. Many of which are harmless, asymptomatic, and disappear without any intervention within a few months.
But some HPVs, notably 16 and 18, are high-risk carcinogens and cause 70% of cervical cancers, the 4th most common cancer in women! HPV is also implicated in cancers of the anus, penis, vulva vagina, mouth, and throat.
The protection rate of the HPV vaccine is very high if it is given before exposure to the virus, i.e. in pre-adolescence. However, catch-up vaccination is possible up to the age of 20.
