  • I made an appointment for a dermatologist due to a rash on my head while traveling and I was seen promptly. Dr Desmarest was very friendly and professional and Was able to prescribe me some medicine to take care of the issue. Great service and I highly recommend this business and Dr Desmarest!

    Friendly service, great receptionists, efficient doctors and the best nurse. Managed to get appointment within 30 minutes of pitching up. If you get sick in Portugal on a foreign trip, this is THE best place to go.

    I was lucky enough to find Alegria Medical Centre when I acquired a debilitating cough that threatened to trigger my decades long back problem. The Intake Personnel were pleasant and had patience communicating with me after I ran out of the apartment forgetting my hearing aids. Dr. Maria Hatton has the experience and intelligence to give me the benefit of a doubt based on my experience in how I needed to avoid what would have become a hard to treat back issue. In preparing to write this review I learned how keenly her values align with mine as a Chef with a Science background who believes everything about my health begins with the food I eat, the exercise I do and the activity level I maintain. I have some days to go but I can now get the rest I badly need in a way that won’t aggravate my back. As I prepare to make Portugal my second home I can now add Alegria Medical Centre and Dr. Hatton to my team of trusted professionals who I know will have my back when I need help.

Insurance and Reimbursement

Please note that we do not accept either the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is only valid in public healthcare facilities.

All consultations and medical services must be paid for by the patient at the time of the appointment.

If you have travel insurance or private health insurance, you may be able to claim reimbursement directly from your insurer following your consultation.

To do so, you will generally need the following documents:

  1. Medical certificate
    Please request this directly from your doctor during your consultation.
  2. Invoice
    This will be sent to you by email once payment has been made.

Reimbursement conditions and amounts depend entirely on the terms of your insurance policy. We cannot guarantee either coverage or reimbursement of any medical expenses incurred.

What should I do if I become ill during my stay in Lisbon?

You can quickly book an appointment with a GP or a specialist, depending on your needs. We regularly care for travellers and tourists visiting Lisbon.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

In most cases, you can see a GP on the same day. For specialist consultations, waiting times vary depending on the specialty and the practitioner’s availability.

Can tourists book an appointment?

Yes. We welcome tourists, travellers and expatriates every day. You can easily book an appointment at Alegria Medical Centre in Lisbon.

Do you see children?

Yes. All of our GPs are experienced in caring for children of all ages, from infants to teenagers.

Do your doctors speak French or English?

Yes. Our medical team includes French-speaking, English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking doctors. If you book online, you can view the languages spoken by each doctor. If you prefer to call us, we will help you find a doctor who speaks your language.

Can I be seen for an urgent medical problem?

We can treat many conditions requiring prompt medical attention, including infections, pain, fever, digestive issues, ENT conditions and skin problems. However, in the event of a life-threatening emergency, you should call 112 or attend the nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) department.

Can I use my European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) at your clinic?

No. The EHIC is only valid in public healthcare facilities in Portugal.

Do I need travel insurance to receive treatment?

No. You can consult a doctor without travel insurance. If you do have travel or private health insurance, we will provide the necessary documents to support any reimbursement claim.

What documents should I bring to my appointment?

For your first consultation, you will generally only need to bring a valid form of identification:

  • Passport
  • National identity card
  • Driving licence

Do I need a Portuguese tax number (NIF) or healthcare number?

No. Tourists and non-residents do not need a Portuguese NIF or healthcare number to attend a consultation.

Can I obtain a prescription during my consultation?

Yes, if medically appropriate. The doctor will assess your condition and prescribe the most suitable treatment where necessary.

I forgot my medication at home. How can I obtain it in Portugal?

If you have forgotten your medication during your stay in Lisbon, our doctors may be able to issue a Portuguese prescription if medically appropriate.

During your consultation, the doctor may ask for:

  • The name of your medication
  • A previous prescription

Following a medical assessment, a Portuguese prescription can be issued, allowing you to obtain your medication from a local pharmacy.

Can invoices be provided in French or English?

Invoices are issued in Portuguese. However, an English medical report can be provided upon request for insurance purposes.
