Walk-in patients are welcome. However, we recommend booking online whenever possible to reduce your waiting time. During busy periods, we cannot guarantee a same-day consultation without an appointment.

Insurance and Reimbursement
Please note that we do not accept either the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is only valid in public healthcare facilities.
All consultations and medical services must be paid for by the patient at the time of the appointment.
If you have travel insurance or private health insurance, you may be able to claim reimbursement directly from your insurer following your consultation.
To do so, you will generally need the following documents:
- Medical certificate

This will be sent to you by email once payment has been made.
Reimbursement conditions and amounts depend entirely on the terms of your insurance policy. We cannot guarantee either coverage or reimbursement of any medical expenses incurred.

What should I do if I become ill during my stay in Lisbon?
You can quickly book an appointment with a GP or a specialist, depending on your needs. We regularly care for travellers and tourists visiting Lisbon.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
In most cases, you can see a GP on the same day. For specialist consultations, waiting times vary depending on the specialty and the practitioner’s availability.
Can tourists book an appointment?
Yes. We welcome tourists, travellers and expatriates every day. You can easily book an appointment at Alegria Medical Centre in Lisbon.
Do you see children?
Yes. All of our GPs are experienced in caring for children of all ages, from infants to teenagers.
Do your doctors speak French or English?
Yes. Our medical team includes French-speaking, English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking doctors. If you book online, you can view the languages spoken by each doctor. If you prefer to call us, we will help you find a doctor who speaks your language.
Can I be seen for an urgent medical problem?
We can treat many conditions requiring prompt medical attention, including infections, pain, fever, digestive issues, ENT conditions and skin problems. However, in the event of a life-threatening emergency, you should call 112 or attend the nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) department.
Can I use my European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) at your clinic?
No. The EHIC is only valid in public healthcare facilities in Portugal.
Do I need travel insurance to receive treatment?
No. You can consult a doctor without travel insurance. If you do have travel or private health insurance, we will provide the necessary documents to support any reimbursement claim.
What documents should I bring to my appointment?
For your first consultation, you will generally only need to bring a valid form of identification:
- Passport
- National identity card
- Driving licence
Do I need a Portuguese tax number (NIF) or healthcare number?
No. Tourists and non-residents do not need a Portuguese NIF or healthcare number to attend a consultation.
Can I obtain a prescription during my consultation?
Yes, if medically appropriate. The doctor will assess your condition and prescribe the most suitable treatment where necessary.
I forgot my medication at home. How can I obtain it in Portugal?
If you have forgotten your medication during your stay in Lisbon, our doctors may be able to issue a Portuguese prescription if medically appropriate.
During your consultation, the doctor may ask for:
- The name of your medication
- A previous prescription
Following a medical assessment, a Portuguese prescription can be issued, allowing you to obtain your medication from a local pharmacy.
Can invoices be provided in French or English?
Invoices are issued in Portuguese. However, an English medical report can be provided upon request for insurance purposes.
